A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
