Approximately 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Officers state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then located many other marked vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Police state early analysis indicate the substance was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; officials are not yet informed of any injuries in association with the event," they commented.
City officials announced they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for details.
A senior representative stated the attack made him stunned and had to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on a platform, recalling the death of nine victims by a shooter targeting individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
