Ghostface Original Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Franchise with Scream 7.

The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a massive family reunion. This latest installment marks the legendary return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters making a comeback.

"Coming back to a character you portrayed in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard reveals.

A Triumphant Return for Fallen Characters

Reports have confirmed that a trio of different characters from past films are slated to reappear in this new outing, even though meeting their demise in prior movies. The precise method of their resurrection remains a mystery. Fans should prepare for the reappearance of the beloved and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Iconic Legacy

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first time since a small cameo is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The performer vividly recalls the precise instant he got the offer from the original writer.

"I remember the conversation. I recall the small talk. I recall him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he states. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm really excited to be back."

Stu Macher has attained cult status in the decades since the 1996 movie was released, which made Lillard feeling very trepidatious.

"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he explains. "A part that is now represented in each and every Ghostface mask that walks around every October 31st."

The Fear of Disappointing the Fans

Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He admits to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular series.

"It's either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "At the start, I don't know if the film will be successful. I am unsure if people want to see me. I've definitely seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not ruin the series. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Theories and Anticipation Run High

While countless longtime fans are excited for Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others return persists. Perhaps they exist rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a prior storyline. Or, maybe they are in some way still living in a strange shared scenario. The possibility of a self-referential story, inspired by classic genre films, also is on the table.

Moviegoers will discover the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
