New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such drugs need to be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to original mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication explain a intense return of hunger.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you become starving," recalled a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural changes.
