PSG Edges Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now secured the prestigious cup on 14 separate occasions.

The Parisian giants required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a successful spot-kick decider to get past their arch-rivals in the Gulf and secure a fourth straight French Super Cup victory.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a comfortable triumph in the match between the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup winners after the French winger opened the net early on.

Yet, Marseille struck two times in the closing moments to take a surprise lead. Initially, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of events, the Portuguese striker grabbed a crucial leveler in the final seconds to force the match into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then emerged as the hero, stopping crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted successfully for PSG to seal a 4-1 shootout victory.

The record champions PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the 12th time in the past 13 seasons.
