Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but within Together resides a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when the couple move from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
