Two Separate Cuba-Destined Relief Ships Declared Lost after Leaving the Coast of Mexico.
A comprehensive search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in the Caribbean region for a duo of missing sailboats loaded with humanitarian supplies traveling from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.
Maritime Search and Rescue Missions Initiated
Mexico has deployed naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting no fewer than nine total personnel, according to a military release.
The ships had been expected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the statement clarified.
The Situation of Aid to the Nation
Cuba has leaned on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the nation endures widespread national electricity failures.
"Both crews and captains are experienced sailors, and the two ships are equipped with suitable safety equipment and emergency beacons," a representative for the convoy commented.
The nine crew members are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.
"Our team is co-operating fully with the officials and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.
Previous Relief Mission
Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and officially received a separate vessel that had transported 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the island.
That vessel, nicknamed "a new Granma" following the name of the yacht in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, carried photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, cycles and foodstuffs.
Larger International Climate
Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of attempts to bring essential supplies to Cuba since January, when a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation began.
The United Nations have since raised alarms about ""severe" lack of essential goods, with over fifty thousand surgeries called off in Cuba amid power shortages.
Foreign policy tensions have been ramped up lately, with statements from different representatives highlighting the complex state of relations.
Responding to recent proposals, a prominent Cuban official declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Accounts suggest that early stages of talks had begun, although their present status remains uncertain.
The Mexican navy affirmed it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its command to find the vessels and ensure the well-being of the people on board.
To date, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban government.
